Why Are TV Mount Screws Too Short?

TV mount screws may seem too short after adding brackets, spacers, or washers, but using a longer bolt without checking the TV’s threaded depth can cause serious damage. This guide explains how to identify the problem safely and choose the correct replacement.

Stop if the bolts barely engage

If the TV mounting bolts catch only a few threads, spin freely, or cannot tighten the brackets securely, do not hang or leave the TV loaded on the mount. The issue may be a simple spacer or washer adjustment, but it can also indicate the wrong screw diameter, pitch, length, bracket fit, or a damaged TV mounting hole.

The correct replacement is not simply “the longest bolt that fits.” A bolt that is too long can bottom out inside the TV, damage internal components, or prevent the bracket from clamping properly.

To determine the correct length, verify the TV manufacturer’s mounting instructions, the mount manual, and the required bolt diameter, thread pitch, and usable length. If those specifications are unavailable or conflict, contact the TV or mount manufacturer before proceeding.

Why TV mount screws seem too short

Several parts can consume the available bolt length:

  • The thickness of the mounting bracket
  • Spacers needed for a curved, recessed, or uneven TV back
  • Washers supplied with the mount
  • A mounting interface or adapter plate
  • A replacement bracket that is thicker than the original
  • A bolt that is the correct diameter but shorter than the required length
  • A bolt with the wrong thread pitch that cannot fully enter the TV’s threaded insert

The bolt’s total length is not the same as the thread engagement left inside the TV. Measure or compare the section that remains after passing through every bracket, spacer, and washer.

The basic length relationship

As a planning formula:

Available bolt length inside the TV = bolt length − bracket thickness − spacer thickness − washer thickness

This is only a way to understand the problem. The acceptable result must still match the TV manufacturer’s specified mounting hardware and threaded-hole depth.

Do not use the formula to guess a safe length when the TV’s specifications are unknown. Threaded inserts differ between models, and a longer bolt is not automatically safer.

First separate the TV bolts from the wall hardware

A TV mount installation has two separate fastener systems:

  1. TV-to-bracket bolts: Attach the vertical rails or adapter plate to the threaded mounting holes on the TV.
  2. Mount-to-wall hardware: Attaches the wall plate to a stud, masonry, or another approved structural surface.

A problem with one does not identify the correct solution for the other.

For example, longer bolts may be needed for the TV brackets after spacers are added. That does not mean the wall lag screws should also be replaced with longer hardware. Conversely, if the wall fasteners are too short to achieve the required structural attachment, changing the TV bolts will not correct the wall connection.

Check whether the problem is adjustment, compatibility, or attachment

1. Adjustment or installation issue

The hardware may be suitable if:

  • The mount manual specifies the bolt size and length you are using.
  • The bolt passes through the bracket and any required spacer.
  • The bolt enters the TV’s threaded insert smoothly by hand.
  • The bracket sits flat or is supported as described by the mount instructions.
  • The bolt tightens without forcing, binding, or bottoming out.

In this case, check whether a washer was installed in the wrong location, whether an unnecessary spacer was added, or whether the bracket is oriented correctly. Follow the mount’s assembly diagram rather than removing parts at random.

Do not omit a spacer that is required to clear a curved or recessed TV back. A spacer may be necessary for the bracket to sit correctly, even though it makes a longer bolt necessary.

2. Compatibility issue

Treat the hardware as incompatible until verified if:

  • The bolt diameter or thread pitch does not match the TV insert.
  • The bracket holes do not align with the TV’s VESA pattern.
  • The supplied bolt length does not work with the TV configuration shown in the manual.
  • The bracket contacts the TV unevenly.
  • The TV requires spacers or an adapter that the mount does not provide.
  • The mount’s stated TV weight or size range does not cover the TV.
  • A replacement bracket or mount has different hole spacing or hardware requirements.

VESA pattern alone does not prove that the supplied bolts are correct. You still need the TV’s supported mounting pattern, weight, bolt specification, and any required spacer arrangement.

3. Wall-attachment failure

Stop and reassess the installation if the wall plate is the part that feels loose, the wall screws do not reach the structural material, or the fasteners are installed only in unsuitable surface material.

Wall attachment depends on the wall type and the mount’s approved installation method. Wood-stud, masonry, metal-stud, and drywall installations have different requirements. Do not assume that a generic longer screw, drywall anchor, or leftover hardware creates a safe structural connection.

If the wall plate can move, the fasteners spin without tightening, or the installation does not match the mount instructions, unload the mount and correct the wall attachment before hanging the TV.

How to choose the correct TV mounting bolt length

Use this order of checks:

  1. Read the TV manual first. Look for the specified mounting screw diameter, thread pitch, length range, spacers, and installation notes.
  2. Read the mount manual. Confirm which bolts are intended for the TV-to-bracket connection and whether the listed lengths change when spacers are used.
  3. Confirm the VESA layout. The mounting holes on the TV and bracket must align without forcing the rails or adapter plate.
  4. Confirm the bolt diameter and thread pitch. A bolt that appears to fit but binds can damage the threaded insert.
  5. Account for every layer. Include the bracket, spacer, washer, adapter plate, and any other part between the bolt head and TV.
  6. Check the threaded-hole depth. The bolt must not bottom out before the bracket is clamped, and it must not be long enough to contact internal parts.
  7. Use only verified replacement hardware. Obtain the correct hardware from the TV manufacturer, mount manufacturer, or a reputable hardware source that can verify the exact specification.

Test the bolt by turning it gently by hand before placing the TV on the mount. It should start smoothly and should not require a wrench to force the first threads. Do not use power tools for this test.

Do not judge engagement by bolt-head position alone

A bolt head sitting close to the bracket does not prove that the connection is secure. The bracket may be held away from the TV by a spacer, or the bolt may be bottomed out in the threaded insert.

Similarly, a bolt that protrudes visibly through a bracket may still be too short if the bracket is thick or a spacer is missing. The relevant checks are:

  • Correct thread size and pitch
  • Correct usable length after all layers
  • Smooth hand-threading
  • Proper bracket contact
  • No bottoming out
  • Compliance with the TV and mount instructions

When to unload or remove the TV

Unload the TV from the mount, or have a qualified installer do so, if any of the following applies:

  • The bolts engage only minimally or cannot be tightened to the specified condition.
  • The TV rocks, shifts, tilts unexpectedly, or pulls away from the bracket.
  • A bolt turns but never tightens.
  • A threaded insert appears stripped, damaged, or loose.
  • The bracket is bent or does not sit flat.
  • You used unverified bolts, improvised spacers, or modified hardware.
  • The wall plate moves or the wall fasteners are not securely attached to an approved structural surface.
  • You suspect a bolt is bottoming out inside the TV.
  • The TV has already been mounted with questionable hardware.

Do not try to solve insufficient engagement by overtightening, adding extra washers without checking the specifications, forcing a mismatched bolt, gluing the bolt, drilling the TV, or relying on thread-locking compound as a substitute for correct hardware.

If the TV is large, heavy, fragile, or difficult to handle safely, use two or more people or hire a qualified professional. Keep the screen supported while correcting the hardware.

Common mistakes that create a short-bolt problem

  • Adding spacers without switching to the specified longer bolts
  • Using washers that were not part of the approved assembly
  • Mixing the TV bolts with the wall-mount hardware
  • Choosing a bolt by diameter alone while ignoring thread pitch
  • Reusing bolts from a previous mount without verifying the new configuration
  • Assuming all TVs use the same mounting-hole depth
  • Tightening a bolt that is binding instead of starting smoothly
  • Replacing structural wall hardware with a convenient screw
  • Mounting the TV before checking the complete bracket-and-spacer stack
  • Treating a VESA match as proof of complete mount compatibility

Troubleshooting checklist

Before loading the TV onto the mount, confirm:

  • [ ] The TV and mount manuals identify compatible mounting dimensions and weight limits.
  • [ ] The TV’s VESA pattern aligns with the bracket without force.
  • [ ] The TV bolts have the correct diameter and thread pitch.
  • [ ] The bolt length accounts for the bracket, spacers, washers, and adapter plates.
  • [ ] Each bolt starts smoothly by hand.
  • [ ] The bolts do not bottom out in the TV.
  • [ ] The bracket or rails sit in the position specified by the instructions.
  • [ ] Required spacers have not been removed.
  • [ ] Unneeded spacers or washers have not been added.
  • [ ] The wall plate is firmly attached using the approved method for the wall type.
  • [ ] The mount is not being used beyond its verified TV weight or configuration limits.
  • [ ] The TV will be supported by enough people during lifting and loading.
  • [ ] No bolt, insert, bracket, or wall fastener shows damage.

If any box remains unchecked, keep the TV unloaded until the manufacturer’s instructions or a qualified installer confirms the correct hardware and installation method.
