What Is VESA Mounting?

VESA mounting is the standardized hole pattern on the back of a TV used to attach a wall mount or stand. Learn how to match VESA dimensions, TV weight, mount ratings, spacers, and clearance before buying.

What VESA mounting means

VESA mounting refers to the standardized hole pattern used to attach a TV to a wall mount, ceiling mount, tabletop stand, or other display bracket. The pattern is written as two numbers in millimeters:

VESA pattern = horizontal hole spacing × vertical hole spacing

For example, VESA 200 × 200 means the mounting holes are 200 mm apart horizontally and 200 mm apart vertically, measured center to center.

To determine whether a TV and mount are compatible, you need to verify all of these requirements:

  1. The TV's VESA pattern matches a pattern supported by the mount.
  2. The TV's weight without its stand is within the mount's weight rating.
  3. The TV's size is within the mount's stated supported range, if one is provided.
  4. The mounting screws, hole depth, spacers, and bracket position fit the TV.
  5. The wall and fasteners can safely support the combined load.
  6. The mount leaves enough room for cables, ports, ventilation, and movement.

VESA is essential, but it is only one part of a complete compatibility check.

How to read a VESA number

A VESA specification describes hole spacing, not the TV's screen size or weight.

VESA notationMeaning

These examples explain the notation only. They do not confirm that a particular TV or mount uses any of these patterns.

The pattern is normally found in the TV's technical specifications, installation manual, product label, or manufacturer support page. A mount's product page or manual should list the VESA patterns it supports. Do not assume that a larger TV uses a larger VESA pattern, or that two TVs of the same size use the same pattern.

What VESA does not tell you

A VESA number does not tell you:

  • How much the TV weighs
  • Whether the TV has recessed mounting holes
  • Which screws are required
  • Whether the mount fits your wall
  • How far the TV will sit from the wall
  • Whether the mount can swivel or tilt without hitting the wall
  • Whether cables will fit behind the TV
  • Whether the TV's ports remain accessible

Treat the VESA pattern as the first compatibility measurement, not the complete specification.

Verify the TV and mount requirements

Before choosing a mount, compare the TV's verified specifications with the mount's verified specifications.

1. Verify the TV's VESA pattern

Find the TV's exact model number and confirm its VESA pattern from a reliable manufacturer source or the TV manual. Measure the hole spacing only if the specification is unavailable and the holes are easy to access.

Measure from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the opposite hole:

  • Measure horizontally for the first number.
  • Measure vertically for the second number.
  • Record the result in millimeters.
  • Check whether the pattern is centered or offset in a way that affects the mount's position.

Avoid measuring from the outside edges of the holes. That can produce an incorrect result, especially when the holes are recessed or elongated.

2. Verify the TV's weight without its stand

Use the TV's weight without the removable stand or feet. The relevant comparison is:

TV weight without stand ≤ mount weight rating

A mount's weight rating is not a recommendation to load it up to the limit without checking the rest of the installation. The wall, anchors, fasteners, bracket position, and installation method also need to be suitable for the load.

Do not use shipping weight, packaged weight, or the weight of the TV with its stand unless the manufacturer specifically identifies that figure as the wall-mounting weight.

3. Verify the mount's supported VESA range

A mount may support:

  • One exact VESA pattern
  • Several listed patterns
  • A range of horizontal and vertical hole spacing
  • A maximum bracket dimension that does not clearly cover every possible pattern

Use the mount's stated compatibility information rather than estimating from its physical size. If the mount lists a range, confirm that the TV's horizontal and vertical measurements both fall within the supported range.

A mount can be physically wide enough for a TV but still fail to support its hole pattern.

4. Check the supported TV size range carefully

Many mounts list a supported screen-size range. This can help narrow your options, but screen size alone does not establish compatibility.

Use this order of priority:

  1. VESA pattern
  2. TV weight
  3. Mount rating
  4. Mount construction and installation requirements
  5. Stated screen-size range

If the TV's VESA pattern and weight fit but its size falls outside the mount's stated range, treat that as an unresolved compatibility issue and check the manufacturer's instructions before purchasing.

Recessed holes, spacers, and screw fit

Some TVs have mounting holes set inside a recessed area or surrounded by a curved rear housing. In that situation, the mounting arms may not sit flat against the TV without spacers.

Spacers can help:

  • Bridge a recess
  • Keep the mounting bracket from pressing against the TV housing
  • Create room for screws to engage correctly
  • Clear a curved or uneven rear panel

Use only the spacer arrangement and screw type permitted by the TV and mount instructions. Do not stack random washers or use longer screws simply because they appear to reach the threads.

The required screw must have the correct:

  • Thread diameter
  • Thread pitch
  • Engagement depth
  • Head style
  • Length after accounting for the bracket and any spacers

A screw that is too short may not engage securely. A screw that is too long can damage internal components. If the supplied hardware does not fit the TV's documented mounting holes, stop and verify the required hardware rather than forcing it.

Do not use screws as depth gauges

Thread depth varies by TV model. The correct screw length depends on the TV's hole depth, the bracket thickness, and whether spacers are required. Use the TV and mount manuals for the approved hardware whenever possible.

Check port and cable clearance

A compatible VESA pattern does not guarantee that cables will fit after installation. The TV's ports may point straight backward, downward, or sideways, and the mount may hold the TV close to the wall.

Before installing, check:

  • HDMI, USB, Ethernet, antenna, optical, and power connections
  • The thickness and bend radius of each cable
  • Whether the mount's bracket covers or blocks a port
  • Whether the mount's lowest position changes access to the ports
  • Whether the TV can tilt without pinching cables
  • Whether a full-motion mount has enough slack for extension and swiveling
  • Whether vents remain unobstructed

For a fixed mount, cable access may be difficult once the TV is attached. Connect cables before hanging the TV if the installation instructions allow it, and leave enough slack for the TV's final position.

VESA compatibility and mount type

The VESA pattern helps determine whether the TV can attach to the mount. The mount type determines how the TV will move and how much clearance the installation needs.

Fixed mounts

Fixed mounts hold the TV close to the wall and usually provide little or no adjustment after installation. They can work well when:

  • The viewing position is directly in front of the TV.
  • The wall is relatively flat.
  • Rear ports are accessible before installation.
  • The TV does not need to be tilted downward.

Confirm the mount's installed depth and the TV's rear shape before choosing a low-profile design.

Tilting mounts

Tilting mounts allow the screen to angle up or down. They may help reduce glare or improve viewing when the TV is mounted above eye level.

Check the manufacturer's instructions for the mount's adjustment range. Also confirm that tilting will not pull cables tight or cause the TV to contact the wall.

Full-motion mounts

Full-motion mounts typically allow some combination of extension, swiveling, and tilting. They require additional clearance behind and beside the TV.

Confirm:

  • The wall and fasteners are suitable for the mount.
  • The TV remains within the mount's supported weight and VESA limits throughout the intended movement.
  • Cables have enough slack for extension and swivel.
  • Nearby walls, cabinets, and furniture will not block movement.
  • The mount can be positioned at the required viewing angle.

A full-motion mount is not automatically better. It is useful when you need movement, but it generally makes cable management and wall installation more demanding.

Wall type is a separate compatibility check

VESA compatibility describes the connection between the TV and the mount. It does not determine whether the wall can support the installation.

Identify the wall construction before drilling:

  • Wood-stud wall
  • Concrete or masonry
  • Metal-stud wall
  • Drywall without a suitable structural attachment
  • Other construction requiring specialized hardware

Follow the mount manufacturer's approved installation method for that wall type. Do not assume that drywall anchors, masonry anchors, or fasteners supplied with a mount are suitable for every wall.

For stud-mounted installations, locate the actual structural members and follow the required spacing and fastener instructions. For masonry or other wall types, use hardware and methods rated for that construction. If you cannot identify the wall structure or confirm the fastening method, consult a qualified installer.

Mounting height and final position

VESA compatibility does not set the correct mounting height. The mount's bracket holes, the TV's dimensions, and the TV's center position all affect the final location.

Before drilling, mark the desired screen position and account for:

  • The TV's overall height and width
  • The location of the VESA holes on the rear panel
  • The mount's vertical adjustment range
  • Viewing height from the primary seating position
  • Furniture, soundbars, and other equipment
  • Power outlets and cable routes
  • Door swings, windows, and nearby walls

A mount can be technically compatible but still install too high, too low, too close to a cabinet, or too far from the power and signal connections.

A complete VESA compatibility checklist

Use this checklist before buying or installing a TV mount:

  • [ ] I have the TV's exact model number.
  • [ ] I verified the TV's VESA pattern in millimeters.
  • [ ] I verified whether the mounting holes are recessed or offset.
  • [ ] I confirmed the TV's weight without its stand.
  • [ ] I confirmed the mount's maximum weight rating.
  • [ ] I confirmed that the mount supports the TV's complete VESA pattern.
  • [ ] I checked the mount's stated screen-size range.
  • [ ] I verified the approved screws, spacers, and mounting depth.
  • [ ] I checked rear-panel shape and port clearance.
  • [ ] I selected fixed, tilting, or full-motion movement based on the room.
  • [ ] I confirmed that the wall type and approved fasteners are suitable.
  • [ ] I planned the mounting height and final viewing position.
  • [ ] I checked cable slack for the TV's final position and movement.
  • [ ] I reviewed both the TV and mount installation instructions.

If any item is unknown, do not rely on the VESA number alone. Confirm the missing specification before ordering or drilling.
