VESA 200x200 and 400x400 describe the distance between mounting holes on the back of a TV. Learn how to verify the correct pattern, weight rating, bracket fit, recessed holes, and port clearance before buying a mount.

VESA 200x200 vs 400x400: The Short Answer

VESA 200x200 and VESA 400x400 are mounting-hole patterns measured in millimeters from the center of one hole to the center of the opposite hole. A VESA 200x200 TV has holes 200 mm apart horizontally and vertically; a VESA 400x400 TV has holes 400 mm apart in both directions.

A larger TV often uses VESA 400x400, but screen size alone does not determine compatibility. To choose a mount safely, verify all of the following for the exact TV and mount:

  1. The TV’s VESA pattern.
  2. The TV’s weight without its stand.
  3. The mount’s supported VESA patterns or adjustment range.
  4. The mount’s maximum weight rating.
  5. The mount’s supported screen-size range.

  7. Clearance around recessed holes, ports, cables, and the bracket itself.

If the TV is VESA 400x400 and the mount only supports VESA 200x200, do not assume the bracket will fit. Use a mount whose specifications explicitly include 400x400 or an appropriate documented range.

What VESA 200x200 and 400x400 Mean

The VESA pattern describes the spacing of the threaded mounting holes on the back of the TV. The first number is the horizontal spacing, and the second is the vertical spacing.

A simple VESA check

You can confirm the pattern by checking:

1. Confirm the exact TV model

Do not rely only on the TV’s diagonal size, series name, or a retailer category. Different sizes or revisions within the same product family can use different VESA patterns and have different weights.

Record the full model number, then verify the specifications for that exact model.

2. Verify the TV’s weight without the stand

Use the TV weight without its pedestal or feet when comparing it with a wall mount’s weight rating. The mount supports the TV, not the removed stand.

A conservative compatibility check is:

TV weight without stand <= mount maximum weight rating

For example, if a TV weighs 62 lb without its stand and a mount is rated for 80 lb, the weight comparison passes. You must still confirm the VESA pattern, size range, wall attachment, and hardware.

Do not add the stand weight to the wall-mounted TV unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so. Also avoid treating a mount’s maximum rating as a recommendation to operate at the limit without following its installation instructions.

3. Confirm the mount’s supported VESA range

Some mounts list individual patterns, such as 100x100, 200x200, and 400x400. Others list a maximum horizontal and vertical adjustment range.

A range is useful only if both dimensions are covered. For a VESA 400x400 TV, a mount must accommodate:

  • At least 400 mm horizontally.
  • At least 400 mm vertically.
  • The correct hole orientation and rail position.
  • The TV’s mounting screw locations without interference.

Do not infer compatibility from a mount’s maximum screen size. A mount can support a large screen but still omit the VESA pattern your TV uses.

4. Check the mount’s supported screen-size range

The screen-size range is a secondary check, not a substitute for VESA and weight verification. Confirm that the TV’s diagonal size falls within the mount’s stated range, then check the physical dimensions and movement clearance.

A large TV may fit the VESA pattern but still be unsuitable for a compact mount because the TV extends beyond the bracket’s intended geometry or movement envelope.

Recessed Mounting Holes and Spacers

Some TVs have mounting holes that are recessed below the back panel. Others have an uneven rear housing, a curved back, or a cable area close to the mounting points.

This can affect how the bracket sits against the TV.

Use spacers only when:

  • The TV or mount instructions call for them.
  • They create a flat, stable bracket interface.
  • The supplied screw length remains appropriate.

A mount can match the VESA pattern and still be a poor physical fit if the bracket blocks ports or leaves insufficient room for cables.

Before final installation, inspect:

  • HDMI, USB, Ethernet, antenna, optical, and power connections.
  • Ports that face directly backward.
  • Ports located close to the VESA holes.
  • Cable bends required by the installed mount.
  • The space between the TV and wall.
  • The bracket rails, bolts, spacers, and locking mechanisms.

A fixed or slim mount may leave less room for rear-facing cables than a tilting or articulating mount. Do not force a cable into a sharp bend or allow the TV’s weight to press on a connector.

If the TV has side-facing ports, access may be easier, but the cables can still affect the required wall clearance. Confirm the mount’s installed depth and the cable manufacturer’s bend requirements where relevant.

Mount Type Can Change the Fit

Fixed mounts

Fixed mounts usually keep the TV close to the wall. They can be a good fit when:

  • The viewing position is directly in front of the screen.
  • Rear cable access is not needed frequently.
  • The TV’s ports do not require significant bend space.
  • The bracket supports the exact VESA pattern and weight.

Check the final wall clearance carefully, particularly with recessed holes and backward-facing ports.

Tilting mounts

Tilting mounts can help reduce glare or accommodate a higher installation position. They may also provide more room for connecting cables before the TV is secured, but the installed position and tilt range vary by model.

Verify that:

  • The tilt mechanism does not contact the wall or TV.
  • Cables remain free when the TV is tilted.
  • The bracket supports the TV’s exact VESA pattern.

Full-motion mounts

Full-motion mounts need additional planning for extension, swivel, and cable movement. A VESA 400x400 TV may fit the plate, but the wall structure and the extended load still matter.

Check:

  • The wall type and permitted attachment points.
  • The mount’s instructions for stud, masonry, or other approved surfaces.
  • Clearance from adjacent walls, cabinets, and furniture.
  • Cable slack during extension and swivel.

Consider mounting height and viewing angle

The correct mount is also affected by where the TV will sit. A high installation may favor a tilting mount, while a lower, straight-on installation may not need tilt.

Before drilling, mark:

  • The desired screen center height.
  • The position of the VESA holes relative to the TV’s top and bottom edges.
  • The bracket’s vertical adjustment.
  • Furniture, soundbar, and outlet locations.

Measure the TV and bracket together. The center of the VESA pattern is not always the center of the visible screen, so mounting the bracket at a chosen height does not automatically place the screen center there.
