How to Measure VESA Mounting Holes
Learn how to measure the horizontal and vertical spacing between your TV’s mounting holes when the VESA specification is missing. Then confirm weight, mount, spacer, port, and wall compatibility before installing.
The correct VESA measurement is the center-to-center distance between the TV’s mounting holes, measured horizontally and vertically in millimeters. Record it as:
Horizontal spacing × vertical spacing
For example, if the holes are 400 mm apart from left to right and 200 mm apart from top to bottom, the pattern is 400 × 200 mm.
A measurement alone does not confirm that a mount will fit. Before buying or installing, also verify the TV’s weight without its stand, the mount’s rated capacity and supported VESA patterns, the mount’s supported size range, screw and spacer requirements, port clearance, and wall suitability.
Start with the exact TV and mount requirements
Find the TV’s official specifications first
Search the TV’s model number in the manufacturer’s manual or specifications page. Look for:
- VESA mounting pattern
- TV weight without the stand
- Recommended screw size and screw length
- Notes about recessed mounting holes
- Instructions for spacers or adapters
- Clearance requirements around ports and the power connection
Use the exact model number. A product family can include several screen sizes or regional versions with different VESA patterns and weights.
If the manufacturer lists a VESA pattern, treat that as the primary specification. Measuring is useful for confirming the information or identifying a TV with missing documentation, but it should not override a warning in the installation manual.
Verify the mount’s specifications
Before comparing the TV’s measurements with a mount, check the mount’s product specifications for:
- Supported VESA patterns
- Maximum TV weight
- Supported screen-size range, if provided
- Mount type, such as fixed, tilting, or full-motion
- Required TV screw size and length
- Spacer or adapter requirements
- Clearance needed for movement, cables, and ports
- Installation requirements for your wall type
The TV must fit within the mount’s VESA range and stay below the mount’s stated weight limit. A screen-size range is not a substitute for checking VESA and weight.
How to measure VESA mounting holes
What you need
Use:
- A millimeter ruler or tape measure
- A straightedge, if the holes are difficult to align
- A flashlight for recessed holes
- The TV model number and documentation, if available
Keep the TV stable. If it is already on a stand, do not place it face-down unless the manufacturer’s instructions allow it and the screen is fully protected. For a wall-mounted TV, measure only if you can do so safely without loosening the mount.
Measure horizontally
Measure from the center of the left mounting hole to the center of the right mounting hole.
Do not measure:
- From the outside edges of the holes
- From the inside edges of the holes
- From the edges of the threaded inserts
- From the outside edges of the rear mounting area
Record the result in millimeters.
Measure vertically
Measure from the center of the upper mounting hole to the center of the lower mounting hole.
If there are four holes, measure between the centers of the upper and lower holes on the same side. If the holes are partially hidden by a recessed area, use the threaded insert centers rather than the visible opening.
Your result should look like this:
VESA pattern = horizontal center-to-center distance × vertical center-to-center distance
For example:
Horizontal: 300 mm
Vertical: 200 mm
VESA pattern: 300 × 200 mm
Confirm the pattern with the mount
Compare the measured pattern with the mount’s listed supported patterns. The mount’s arms or mounting plate must reach all required TV mounting holes without forcing the TV into an off-center or unsupported position.
Do not assume that a mount fits because:
- The screen size appears to be within the advertised range
- The mount plate looks physically large enough
- Two of the holes line up
- The TV’s weight is below the mount’s maximum
- The pattern is close but not identical
If the mount specification does not clearly include the measured pattern, contact the manufacturer or choose a mount with a documented match.
Check recessed mounting holes and spacers
Some TVs have threaded mounting holes set below the surrounding rear panel. A flat mount plate may not sit correctly against the TV, and the mount may need spacers supplied or approved by the mount or TV manufacturer.
Check:
- Whether the mounting holes are recessed
- Whether the mount includes spacers
- Whether spacers are required for this TV
- Whether the spacer changes the required screw length
- Whether the mount plate will remain stable and flat
- Whether the screw will engage the threaded insert correctly
Do not stack random washers, use improvised spacers, or force the plate against the TV. Avoid screws that are too long, since they can bottom out in the threaded insert or damage internal components. Avoid screws that are too short, since they may not provide sufficient thread engagement.
Use the TV and mount instructions to determine the approved screw and spacer combination.
Check ports and cable clearance
A VESA pattern can match while the installation still fails because the mount or wall position blocks the TV’s connections.
Inspect the area around the mounting holes for:
- HDMI, USB, antenna, optical, Ethernet, and other ports
- A recessed power inlet
- Cable channels or cable-management features on the mount
- The mount plate, arms, or tilt mechanism
- The wall or back of a recessed media area
For a fixed or tilting mount, connect cables before final placement if the mount or wall will make the ports difficult to reach. For a full-motion mount, check cable length and slack through the complete range of movement. Cables should not become tight, pinched, or sharply bent when the TV is extended, tilted, or swiveled.
If the TV has side-facing ports, clearance may be less of a problem than with rear-facing ports. Confirm this physically rather than relying only on the VESA measurement.
Confirm TV weight and mount capacity
Use the TV’s weight without the stand. The stand can add significant weight and is not part of the wall-mounted load.
Then compare it with the mount’s stated maximum TV weight:
TV weight without stand < mount’s maximum supported weight
This comparison is necessary but not sufficient. The mount must also match the VESA pattern and be installed with the correct hardware in a suitable wall structure.
Do not use the mount’s advertised screen-size range to estimate weight or compatibility. Screen size, TV weight, VESA spacing, and rear-panel design are separate specifications.
Consider mount type and installation fit
Your VESA measurement identifies the TV-to-mount connection. It does not determine whether a fixed, tilting, or full-motion mount is appropriate.
Consider:
- Fixed mount: Usually places the TV close to the wall, so rear port and cable clearance deserve extra attention.
- Tilting mount: Needs room for the tilt mechanism and may change the TV’s final top and bottom clearance.
- Full-motion mount: Needs enough wall strength, cable slack, and clearance for extension and side-to-side movement.
The wall connection is a separate part of the installation. Identify whether you are mounting to wood framing, masonry, metal framing, or another substrate, and use a mounting method approved for that structure. Do not rely on drywall alone unless the selected mounting system is specifically rated and installed for that condition.
Locate suitable framing or masonry, account for the mount’s position and movement, and follow the mount manufacturer’s hardware and installation instructions. If the wall construction or hardware is uncertain, have the installation assessed by a qualified professional.
Common measuring mistakes
Avoid these errors:
- Measuring hole edges instead of hole centers
- Reversing the horizontal and vertical values
- Recording inches without converting to millimeters
- Measuring the TV’s outer dimensions instead of the mounting holes
- Assuming square spacing when the pattern is rectangular
- Ignoring a second set of mounting holes
- Forgetting that the TV weight must exclude the stand
- Using a mount with an unverified VESA range
- Choosing screws by appearance rather than the instructions
- Adding spacers without checking screw engagement
- Ignoring ports, power connections, or cable movement
- Treating screen-size compatibility as proof of fit
If converting inches to millimeters:
Inches × 25.4 = millimeters
For example:
7.87 inches × 25.4 = approximately 200 mm
When the measurement is close to a common listed pattern, recheck it with a straightedge and the manufacturer’s specifications rather than rounding it to force a match.
