How to Know If a TV Mount Will Fit Your TV
Confirm a TV mount fits by matching your TV’s VESA pattern and weight with the mount’s published limits. Then check size range, hole depth, spacers, port clearance, wall type and installation space.
Before buying a TV mount, compare the exact TV model with the mount’s published specifications. A mount fits only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- The TV’s VESA hole pattern matches a pattern supported by the mount.
- The TV’s weight without its stand is below the mount’s rated capacity.
- The TV’s dimensions fall within the mount’s supported size range.
- The mounting holes, spacers and included hardware work with the TV.
- The wall and installation location can safely support the combined load.
- The mount leaves enough room for cables, ports and movement.
Screen size alone is not enough. Two TVs with the same diagonal size can have different VESA patterns, weights, hole depths and port layouts.
Start with the exact TV and mount requirements
Write down the full model number of the TV and the exact model number of the mount. Avoid relying only on a product family name, screen size or a retailer’s shortened description.
For the TV, find:
- Model number
- Weight without the stand
- VESA pattern
- Overall width and height
- Mounting-hole depth or screw requirements, if published
- Port locations and cable direction
- Whether the mounting holes are recessed
For the mount, find:
- Supported VESA patterns
- Maximum TV weight
- Supported screen-size range
- Mount type: fixed, tilting or full-motion
- Maximum extension, swivel or tilt, if relevant
- Supported wall types and installation requirements
- Included screw sizes, washers and spacers
- Required clearance behind the TV
Use the TV manufacturer’s specifications and the mount manufacturer’s installation manual whenever possible. Retailer listings can contain incomplete or conflicting information.
1. Check the TV’s VESA pattern
VESA is the horizontal-by-vertical spacing, in millimeters, between the four mounting holes on the back of the TV.
For example:
- 200 × 200 means the holes are 200 mm apart horizontally and 200 mm apart vertically.
- 400 × 200 means the horizontal spacing is 400 mm and the vertical spacing is 200 mm.
- 600 × 400 means the horizontal spacing is 600 mm and the vertical spacing is 400 mm.
Measure from the centers of the mounting holes, not from their outside edges.
How to measure VESA
- Remove the stand only if the TV’s instructions allow it and the TV can be handled safely.
- Locate the four threaded mounting holes.
- Measure the horizontal distance between the centers of the left and right holes.
- Measure the vertical distance between the centers of the top and bottom holes.
- Record the result in millimeters.
The mount must support the TV’s exact VESA pattern. A mount that supports 400 × 400 does not automatically fit a TV with 400 × 200 unless the mount’s published VESA range specifically includes 400 × 200.
Check whether the mount uses a range
Some mounts list several discrete VESA patterns. Others list a maximum horizontal and vertical span, such as a range covering multiple patterns. Do not assume that a maximum span guarantees every pattern within that rectangle is supported. Check the mount’s compatibility chart or manual.
2. Compare TV weight with the mount’s weight rating
Use the TV’s weight without the stand, legs or base. The mount’s weight rating must be greater than the TV’s mounted weight.
A simple compatibility check is:
TV weight without stand < mount’s maximum rated TV weight
For example, if the TV weighs 52 lb without its stand and the mount is rated for 80 lb, the published weight requirement is satisfied. If the TV weighs 82 lb, that mount should not be used, even if the VESA pattern and screen size appear to match.
Do not add the TV stand’s weight to the mounted load if the stand is removed. Conversely, do not use a mount rating for an accessory or shelf as though it were the rating for the TV itself.
Weight-rating cautions
- Use the mount’s stated TV capacity, not the shipping weight.
- Do not exceed the rating because the TV is only slightly heavier.
- A full-motion mount can place changing forces on the wall and mounting hardware as it extends or swivels.
- The wall, studs, anchors and fasteners must also be suitable for the load.
- If the manufacturer provides separate limits for different wall types or installation configurations, follow the more specific requirement.
The mount rating is not a substitute for confirming that the wall can carry the installation.
3. Check the supported screen-size range
Mount manufacturers often publish a supported TV-size range, such as a minimum and maximum diagonal size. Your TV should fall within that range, but the size range is only one part of the check.
A mount may support a TV’s diagonal size but still fail to fit because of:
- An unsupported VESA pattern
- Excessive TV weight
- A TV body that extends beyond the mount’s frame
- Recessed mounting holes
- Ports that contact the wall or mount
- Insufficient clearance for a full-motion mechanism
Treat the size range as a screening requirement, not proof of compatibility.
Also check the physical dimensions of the mount behind the TV. A small TV may fit the VESA pattern but expose part of the mounting plate, while a large TV may conceal it. Neither situation is automatically unsafe, but the mount’s instructions should allow the configuration.
4. Check recessed mounting holes and spacers
Some TVs have mounting holes that sit inside recessed pockets. In that case, the mounting arms or bracket may not rest flat against the back of the TV.
Spacers can help create a flat, stable connection between the mount and the TV. Use only the spacers and hardware specified or approved by the mount manufacturer. The goal is to keep the mounting hardware fully engaged without pressing against the TV’s back panel.
Look for these problems
- The mounting plate rocks instead of sitting securely.
- The screw bottoms out before the bracket is tight.
- The screw is too short to engage enough thread.
- The screw is too long and contacts internal components.
- The bracket presses against the TV housing.
- A recessed area prevents the mount arms from aligning correctly.
Do not force a bolt, drill into the TV or stack unapproved washers to compensate for a depth problem. If the included hardware does not provide a safe fit, stop and verify the required screw length and spacer arrangement in the TV and mount documentation.
5. Check screw length and mounting-hole depth
A compatible VESA pattern does not guarantee compatible screws. The correct screw must engage the TV’s threaded insert properly without extending too far into the TV.
Confirm:
- Screw diameter and thread type
- Required screw length
- Washer requirements
- Spacer requirements
- Whether the TV manufacturer specifies a maximum insertion depth
The final assembly should be tight and secure, but the screw should not bottom out in the hole or penetrate farther than allowed. If the correct hardware is unclear, contact the TV or mount manufacturer rather than guessing.
6. Check port and cable clearance
The mount may fit the VESA holes and still interfere with the TV’s ports or cables.
Inspect the location of:
- HDMI ports
- USB ports
- Ethernet
- Optical audio
- Antenna or coaxial input
- Power connection
- Component or composite inputs
- Cable channels and strain-relief areas
Ports that face directly backward may need more wall clearance than side-facing or downward-facing ports. A fixed mount usually offers less room to work than a tilting or articulating mount, but the mount’s actual depth matters.
Cable-clearance checks
Before installation, confirm that:
- The mounting plate does not cover a port you need to use.
- Cable plugs can be inserted without being sharply bent.
- The power cord is not pinched between the TV and wall.
- The TV can be moved through its tilt or swivel range without pulling cables.
- The mount does not force cables against a sharp edge.
- Required adapters fit within the available space.
Use cables with the correct connector orientation and length. Do not use the mount’s movement to force a cable into position.
7. Match the mount type to the installation
Compatibility also depends on how you plan to use the TV.
Fixed mounts
A fixed mount is often the shallowest option. It can work well when:
- The TV will face the viewing position directly.
- The wall is flat.
- You do not need to access the back of the TV often.
- Rear-facing ports have enough clearance.
Check whether the mount has a release mechanism and whether you can still reach the cables after installation.
Tilting mounts
A tilting mount can help reduce glare or improve the viewing angle when the TV is mounted above eye level. Check:
- The available tilt range
- Clearance needed above or below the TV
- Whether the TV’s ports remain accessible
- Whether the TV can be leveled after mounting
A tilt feature does not solve every port-clearance problem. The mount may still sit close to the wall when it is in its normal position.
Full-motion mounts
A full-motion mount must be checked for more than VESA and weight. Confirm:
- Extension distance
- Swivel range
- Tilt range
- TV width and balance on the arms
- Cable slack through the full movement
- Wall and stud requirements
- Clearance from nearby walls, cabinets and windows
A TV can fit the bracket but collide with the wall or furniture when extended or swiveled. Check the entire movement path before drilling.
8. Confirm the wall and mounting location
The TV-to-mount connection is only one part of the installation. The wall must also support the mount and TV.
Common wall considerations include:
- Wood studs
- Concrete
- Brick
- Masonry block
- Metal studs
- Drywall without a suitable structural connection
Use the mount manufacturer’s instructions for approved wall types and fasteners. Do not assume that drywall anchors are suitable for a large TV or an articulating mount. Full-motion mounts can create additional leverage when extended, so their wall requirements may be more demanding than those of a fixed mount.
Also check for:
- Electrical wiring and plumbing
- Stud spacing
- The mount’s required fastener locations
- The wall’s condition
- Baseboards, trim or uneven surfaces
- The position of outlets and cable pathways

9. Check mounting height and viewing position
A mount can be technically compatible but poorly positioned. Before installation, mark the likely TV position and sit in the main viewing location.

- Cable access
- Tilt and swivel needs
- Clearance from doors, cabinets and walkways
A higher installation may make a tilt feature useful, but the TV should not be positioned based only on the mount’s VESA hole location. Measure the TV’s outer dimensions and the distance from its VESA holes to its edges.
