How to Find Your TV's VESA Size

Find your TV’s VESA size by checking the exact model specifications or measuring the mounting-hole pattern center to center. Then confirm the mount’s VESA support, weight rating, wall fit, and clearance.

The short answer

Your TV’s VESA size is the horizontal distance and vertical distance between the centers of its mounting holes, measured in millimeters.

For example, if the holes are 400 mm apart horizontally and 200 mm apart vertically, the VESA pattern is 400 × 200 mm.

Before choosing a mount, verify all of these details:

  • Your exact TV model and its VESA pattern
  • The TV’s weight without the stand
  • The mount’s supported VESA patterns
  • The mount’s maximum weight rating
  • The mount’s supported screen-size range
  • Recessed mounting holes and the need for spacers
  • Clearance for cables, ports, and the wall
  • Whether the wall and included or approved hardware are suitable

What does VESA mean?

VESA refers to the Video Electronics Standards Association, which publishes display-mounting interface standards. On a TV, the VESA pattern is the rectangular arrangement of threaded mounting holes on the back.

VESA is written as:

Horizontal hole spacing × vertical hole spacing = VESA size in millimeters

The measurement is taken from the center of one hole to the center of the opposite hole, not from the outside edges of the holes.

VESA size is not the same as:

  • TV screen size, such as 55 inches
  • The TV’s overall width or height
  • The distance from the TV edge to the holes
  • The mounting plate’s overall dimensions
  • The diameter of the threaded holes

A TV can have the same screen size as another model but use a different VESA pattern, so screen size alone is not enough to select a mount.

Step 1: Find the exact TV model

Start with the full model number. It may be printed on:

  • A label on the back of the TV
  • The original box
  • The purchase receipt
  • The TV’s settings menu
  • The manufacturer’s product page or installation manual

Include regional or size suffixes when checking the specifications. Two TVs in the same product series may have different VESA patterns, weights, port layouts, or mounting-hole depths.

Do not rely on a product family name alone. Use the exact model number whenever possible.

Step 2: Check the manufacturer’s VESA specification

The TV’s product specifications or manual may list the mounting pattern directly, often in a format such as:

  • VESA: 200 × 200 mm
  • Mounting interface: 300 × 200 mm
  • Wall-mount pattern: 400 × 400 mm

Also look for:

  • TV weight without the stand
  • Mounting screw information
  • A diagram showing mounting-hole positions
  • Warnings about recessed holes or spacers
  • Required clearance around the back of the TV

Treat the manufacturer’s exact model documentation as the primary source. Retailer listings can contain incomplete or incorrect compatibility information.

Step 3: Measure the VESA pattern if necessary

If the specifications do not list the VESA size, measure the holes on the back of the TV.

How to measure

  1. Remove the stand if it blocks access to the mounting holes, following the TV manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Place the TV face down only on a clean, stable, well-padded surface, or measure it while it remains upright.
  3. Identify the four threaded mounting holes.
  4. Measure from the center of the left hole to the center of the right hole.
  5. Measure from the center of the top hole to the center of the bottom hole.
  6. Record both measurements in millimeters.
  7. Compare the result with the mount’s published VESA pattern list.

Use a rigid tape measure, ruler, or caliper where practical. Avoid estimating from the outer edges of the holes.

Measurement formula

VESA width × height = horizontal center-to-center distance × vertical center-to-center distance

For example:

400 mm horizontal × 300 mm vertical = VESA 400 × 300 mm

The pattern does not have to be square. A 300 × 200 mm pattern is valid even though the horizontal and vertical measurements differ.

If the measured result is slightly different

Recheck that you measured hole centers rather than hole edges. Also confirm that:

  • You measured the same set of four holes
  • The tape was level and straight
  • You recorded millimeters rather than inches
  • The TV is not using an adapter plate or unusual mounting interface
  • The manufacturer’s diagram does not specify a different hole set

Do not round a measurement to a mount’s listed pattern unless the mount documentation explicitly supports that pattern.

Step 4: Match the VESA pattern to the mount

A mount is compatible only when its published specifications support your TV’s mounting pattern.

Compare the TV and mount in this order:

The TV’s VESA pattern must fall within the mount’s supported pattern range or list. A mount that supports the TV’s screen size is not automatically compatible.

Check the weight rating carefully

Use the TV’s weight without the stand, unless the mount manufacturer specifies another measurement. A television’s listed shipping weight or weight with stand is not the same as the weight the mount must support.

The mount’s maximum weight rating must meet or exceed the TV’s stand-free weight. Do not treat a close match as a reason to ignore the manufacturer’s limits.

If the TV uses a soundbar, camera, bias-lighting system, or another accessory attached to the mount, account for that accessory only if the mount manufacturer permits it and provides a suitable rating.

Treat screen-size ranges as a secondary check

Mounts often publish a supported screen-size range, but this is only one part of compatibility. A TV may fall within the advertised diagonal range and still fail because of:

  • An unsupported VESA pattern
  • Excessive weight
  • A rear housing that contacts the mount
  • Recessed holes that need a different mounting solution
  • Ports that become inaccessible
  • Insufficient clearance for cables

Confirm the VESA and weight requirements first, then use the screen-size range as an additional check.

Recessed mounting holes and spacers

Some TVs have mounting holes set below the surrounding rear panel. Others have an uneven back, a curved housing, or a raised section around the holes.

In these cases, the mount plate may not sit flat against the TV. A compatible spacer or standoff may be required to:

  • Keep the mount plate from pressing against the TV housing
  • Provide a flat mounting surface
  • Prevent damage to the rear panel
  • Create room for the correct screw engagement

Use only the screws, washers, spacers, and installation arrangement specified by the TV or mount manufacturer. The screw must be long enough to engage the threads securely but not so long that it reaches internal components.

Never force a screw that does not fit. Thread diameter, pitch, length, and required spacer thickness must be confirmed from the product documentation or the manufacturer.

Check cable and port clearance

VESA compatibility does not guarantee that cables will fit after installation.

Inspect the location and direction of:

  • HDMI ports
  • Power connections
  • Optical audio ports
  • Ethernet ports
  • USB ports
  • Antenna or coaxial connections
  • Component or legacy inputs

A fixed mount may place the TV close to the wall, while a tilt or full-motion mount may change the available space as the TV moves. Check whether the connectors point straight back, downward, sideways, or toward the mounting plate.

Plan cable routing before tightening the TV to the mount. Avoid sharp bends, crushing, or tension on the connectors. If a cable cannot fit without pressure, use a suitable low-profile cable only when it meets the equipment requirements; do not force the TV into a position that strains the port.

Consider the wall and installation position

The VESA pattern describes how the TV attaches to the mount. It does not confirm that the wall can safely support the combined load.

Before installation, identify the wall construction:

  • Wood or metal stud wall
  • Masonry, such as concrete or brick
  • Drywall over another structure
  • Other construction requiring specialized fasteners

Follow the mount manufacturer’s instructions for locating structural support and selecting hardware. Do not assume that drywall anchors alone are suitable for a TV mount, especially for a tilting or articulating mount that applies additional leverage when extended.

Also check:

  • Stud or masonry locations relative to the desired TV position
  • Whether the mount plate can be centered where you need it
  • Clearance from corners, windows, cabinets, and outlets
  • Whether the mount can move without hitting the wall or furniture
  • Whether the TV can be removed later without damaging cables or ports

If the wall construction or hardware requirements are unclear, stop and confirm them with the mount manufacturer or a qualified installer.

When the TV has an unusual mounting interface

Some TVs may have an adapter, a soundbar attachment point, a special bracket, or a rear design that does not work with a standard mount plate. Do not assume that a universal-looking plate will fit every hole arrangement.

Check the TV manual and mount instructions for:

  • Required adapter brackets
  • Prohibited mounting positions
  • Specific spacer arrangements
  • Limits on tilt or rotation
  • Restrictions caused by a rear enclosure or cable cover

If the TV uses a proprietary mounting system, select the approved interface rather than modifying the mount plate or drilling new holes.
