Can a Mount Support a Smaller VESA Pattern?

A mount can support a smaller VESA pattern only when the exact horizontal and vertical hole spacing falls within its stated VESA range. Confirm the TV’s VESA dimensions, weight, mount rating, hardware fit, and clearance before installation.

A mount can support a smaller VESA pattern, but “smaller” by itself is not enough to confirm compatibility. The TV’s exact VESA hole spacing must fall within the mount’s stated horizontal and vertical range, and the TV must also meet the mount’s weight, size, hardware, and clearance requirements.

Start with the exact TV and mount requirements

Before comparing VESA numbers, identify:

  • The exact TV model
  • The TV’s weight without its stand
  • The TV’s VESA pattern
  • The mount’s supported VESA range
  • The mount’s maximum weight rating
  • The mount’s supported screen-size range
  • The wall type and suitable installation hardware
  • Any recessed mounting holes, unusual back-panel shape, or ports near the mounting area

A mount that supports a large VESA pattern may also support smaller patterns, but only if its brackets physically adjust to the TV’s hole locations and the manufacturer lists that pattern within the approved range.

What “smaller VESA” means

VESA is normally expressed as two measurements in millimeters:

  • Horizontal distance between mounting holes
  • Vertical distance between mounting holes

For example, a TV may use a 200 x 100 VESA pattern, while a mount may list support from 75 x 75 through 400 x 400.

In this example, the TV’s pattern may be included because:

  • 200 mm is within the mount’s horizontal range
  • 100 mm is within the mount’s vertical range
  • The mount’s arms or rails can physically reach both hole locations

Do not compare only the total area or one dimension. A 200 x 100 pattern is not automatically compatible with a mount that supports 100 x 200 unless the manufacturer explicitly allows that orientation and the bracket geometry works with the TV.

Check both VESA dimensions

Use this basic test:

Mount horizontal minimum ≤ TV horizontal VESA ≤ mount horizontal maximum
Mount vertical minimum ≤ TV vertical VESA ≤ mount vertical maximum

This is a useful first check, not a complete compatibility determination. Some mounts list a general VESA range but have bracket shapes, slot limits, or installation positions that affect certain patterns.

When the product documentation lists individual supported patterns, use that list over a broad range statement.

Verify the TV’s VESA pattern

Find the VESA specification in the TV’s manual, manufacturer support page, or technical specification sheet. It may be listed as something such as:

  • 75 x 75 mm
  • 100 x 100 mm
  • 200 x 100 mm
  • 200 x 200 mm
  • 300 x 300 mm
  • 400 x 400 mm

Do not assume the pattern from the TV’s screen size. TVs of the same diagonal size can use different VESA patterns, and some models have a non-square pattern.

If the specification is unavailable, measure the centers of the mounting holes:

  1. Measure horizontally from the center of one hole to the center of the opposite hole.
  2. Measure vertically from the center of one hole to the center of the opposite hole.
  3. Record the measurements in millimeters.
  4. Check whether the holes are centered, offset, recessed, or obstructed by the back panel.

Measure between hole centers, not from the outside edges of the holes or brackets.

Confirm the mount’s VESA range

Check the mount’s installation guide or manufacturer specification for:

  • Minimum and maximum horizontal spacing
  • Minimum and maximum vertical spacing
  • Specific supported VESA patterns
  • Whether the range applies to the mount in every orientation
  • Any restrictions for small or unusually shaped TVs

A “wide VESA range” does not mean every possible combination within that rectangle is guaranteed. For example, a mount may accept a broad range using adjustable rails, while a particular hole position could be blocked by the rail, bracket, or locking mechanism.

If the mount documentation provides a compatibility chart, use the exact TV pattern against that chart.

Check TV weight without the stand

Compare the TV’s weight without its stand with the mount’s maximum load rating.

Use the TV-only weight, not the shipping weight and not the weight including the pedestal or feet. The stand is removed during wall mounting, but packaging and accessories can make the shipping weight much higher.

Do not treat the mount’s weight rating as a target. A conservative installation keeps the TV comfortably below the stated maximum and follows the manufacturer’s requirements for wall attachment and hardware.

Also check the mount’s supported screen-size range. Screen size is not a substitute for VESA or weight compatibility, but a TV can still fall outside the mount’s intended geometry even when its hole pattern appears to fit.

Inspect recessed holes and use spacers correctly

Smaller VESA patterns are sometimes located in recessed areas of the TV back. A flat mounting plate may not sit correctly against the TV without spacers.

Spacers can help when they are specifically intended to:

  • Bridge a recessed mounting surface
  • Keep the mounting plate from pressing against the TV housing
  • Align the mounting screws with the threaded inserts
  • Provide clearance around a curved or irregular back panel

Use only hardware and spacers suitable for the TV and mount. The screw must engage the TV’s threaded insert securely without bottoming out.

Avoid:

  • Using screws that are too long
  • Forcing a screw into a shallow insert
  • Stacking improvised washers or spacers
  • Leaving the mounting plate loose against a recess
  • Tightening until the TV back panel or threaded insert is damaged

The correct screw length depends on the TV insert depth, mounting plate thickness, spacer thickness, and washer arrangement. Follow the TV and mount instructions rather than selecting a length based only on the VESA pattern.

Check port and cable clearance

A mount can pass the VESA and weight checks but still be a poor fit if the mounting plate blocks ports or leaves insufficient room for cables.

Before installation, inspect:

  • HDMI, USB, antenna, Ethernet, optical, and power connections
  • Ports that face straight backward rather than sideways
  • Cable bend radius behind the TV
  • The position of the mount’s plate, rails, and locking hardware
  • Whether tilt movement changes cable pressure
  • Whether the wall or mount places the TV close enough to pinch connectors

A recessed mounting area may require spacers, but extra spacing can also increase the TV’s distance from the wall and affect the mount’s leverage. Use the mount’s intended configuration and keep cables from carrying mechanical load.

Consider the mount type

The VESA pattern is only one part of the decision. The mount type affects how much adjustment and clearance the installation needs.

Fixed mount

A fixed mount usually keeps the TV close to the wall. This makes rear-port access and cable bend clearance especially important. Recessed holes may require carefully selected spacers.

Tilting mount

A tilt mount needs enough clearance for the tilt mechanism and connected cables. Check whether the TV can tilt without pulling on cables or contacting the wall.

Full-motion mount

A full-motion mount must support the TV through its full extension and swivel range. A small VESA pattern may fit the plate, but the TV’s weight distribution, depth, and cable length still matter. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for adjustment and locking.

A practical compatibility example

Suppose:

  • TV VESA: 100 x 100 mm
  • TV weight without stand: 28 lb
  • Mount range: 75 x 75 through 400 x 400
  • Mount rating: 80 lb
  • Mount size range: includes the TV’s diagonal size

The VESA and weight checks look favorable, provided the mount’s documentation confirms that 100 x 100 is supported. You would still need to verify:

  • The mounting plate reaches all four holes
  • The holes are not too recessed
  • The supplied or approved hardware fits the TV inserts
  • The plate does not block ports
  • The wall and anchors can support the installation
  • The TV remains secure through the mount’s intended movement

The conclusion should be based on the complete set of checks, not the mount’s maximum VESA number alone.
